Accelerating manufacturing with improved experiences when the world needs it most.
Pfizer is currently undergoing a major global digital transformation to better support the safe and efficient formulation and distribution of life-saving pharmaceuticals. As a part of this effort, Pfizer is using a Scaled Agile Framework® (SAFe®) to drive manufacturing and supply chain excellence. With 9 products, 43 manufacturing sites, 62 Agile development teams, and over 60 custom products, and countless users, Pfizer's manufacturing organization has a lot of change to manage. A patchwork of legacy systems, the race to get the vaccine out, and variability across the manufacturing network contributed to fractured experiences for the people making it all happen.
A Problem.
Using a human-centered approach, our team was initially brought in with a single designer. His role was to consult with the lone Pfizer colleague solely focused on experience within the digital manufacturing organization. Our studio's single designer quickly grew to a team of five when I was brought in as the first researcher to help lead a small vision project that would enhance real-time leadership visibility into key performance indicators.
Through that initial project, we demonstrated the immense power of research in design. Over the course of 18 months on the account, I led the creation of what is now a thriving team of 6 XD researchers and growing. Many of the researchers that joined were new to research and new to pharmaceutical manufacturing, both of which have steep learning curves. In order to ensure we were delivering quality insights in this complex environment, we established flexible standards and embraced practices focused on continuous learning.
The initial vision for the first project became a product that is used to drive critical decisions. Using the foundation I helped establish, our team enhanced the design of dozens of products, improving the work lives of a wide range of users from the "top floor to the shop floor". The team is now working to further unify fractured experiences for users by building connections between products.
An elegant solution.
